The new SCHEELS All Sports Store in Meridian, Idaho, brings the iconic SCHEELS shopping experience to the Treasure Valley, combining retail with entertainment to create a one-of-a-kind destination. Plenium Builders partnered with SCHEELS on their 33rd location, a 240,000-square-foot flagship design that seamlessly blends specialty shopping with family-friendly attractions, all under one roof. From a 65-foot, 16-car Ferris wheel and a 16,000-gallon aquarium full of local aquatic species to interactive sports simulators and boutique shops, the store requires a mix of architectural finishes, fixtures, and features and a level of quality that represents the SCHEELS ethos of expertise, service, and selection.

Executing SCHEELS' Vision Through Careful Planning and Coordination

Constructing a SCHEELS’ store is no small feat, and this project required a detailed, phased approach to ensure every element was delivered to SCHEELS’ high quality standards. The PB team coordinated phased turnovers, completing office and back-of-house areas six months before the grand opening. This approach allowed SCHEELS to move in and prepare for operations, all while our construction team continued work on the retail and entertainment spaces. By aligning with SCHEELS’ timeline and working proactively with local building and fire authorities, PB kept the project on track and minimized any potential disruptions to the store’s fit-out phase.

Crafting a Comfortable Environment with Electrochromatic Glass

A unique feature of the latest SCHEELS design by RLE Group is the use of electrochromatic glass, an innovative, electronically tintable material that automatically adjusts to sunlight levels. Unlike standard glass, electrochromatic glass provides dynamic shading, enhancing comfort and adding efficiency to energy management. Typically the manufacturer would have access to the finished openings to verify the sizes of the constructed openings. Due to the material’s long lead time, the glass was early in the project, before precise field measurements were available. To ensure a flawless installation, Plenium Builders implemented strict quality control measures, double- and triple- checking all rough openings to avoid installation issues.

Problem-Solving for a Seamless Build

Building a SCHEELS store comes with its own set of challenges, and our team faced each one head-on. When concrete supply issues arose, PB acted quickly, sourcing an alternative supplier to maintain the project’s pace. Similarly, two underperforming subcontractors were supplemented to ensure standards and timelines were met. Our team also tackled a delay in electrical gear procurement by devising temporary solutions to power essential areas, allowing construction to proceed without interruption. These proactive solutions reflect our commitment to ensuring that every phase of construction went smoothly.

Bringing SCHEELS to Treasure Valley

Plenium Builders takes pride in delivering a project that supports SCHEELS' vision for their flagship location in Idaho. Our focus on collaboration, careful planning, and quality assurance helped bring this 240,000-square-foot retail experience to life. From meticulous attention to detail to agile problem-solving, we approached every aspect of this build with SCHEELS’ goals in mind. SCHEELS an exacting and demanding client that is a pleasure to work with and we have enjoyed building this productive and positive project together.
