A Vision of Safety and Hope Takes Shape

For decades, Northern Nevada’s tuberculosis clinic worked tirelessly to serve the community, even as it operated out of a deteriorating 1950s-era facility originally built for an entirely different purpose. Patients entered through aging doors, seeking life-saving treatment in a space that was never designed to meet the demands of modern healthcare.

But now, with the support of local leaders and the expertise of Plenium Builders (PB), Northern Nevada Public Health (NNPH) is rewriting that story. The groundbreaking of a new 7,000-square-foot clinic at the West Hills site marks the beginning of a new chapter—one where safety, efficiency, and dignity take center stage.

From Vision to Reality

In December 2024, NNPH broke ground on this state-of-the-art clinic, which will replace the aging facility on Kirman Avenue. Located at the southeast corner of 9th and Sutro Streets, just down the road from NNPH’s main location, the new clinic will address critical public health needs with a thoughtful, modern design.

The project is the first local government public health building constructed in Washoe County since the 1970s, funded by $10 million in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) dollars. The new facility will feature advanced negative air pressure exam rooms to protect patients and staff during tuberculosis testing, as well as labs, waiting areas, and offices to enhance operations and provide a welcoming environment.

Plenium Builders’ Role in Success

Plenium Builders partnered with NNPH during the preconstruction phase to align the project’s vision with practical, achievable solutions. PB provided comprehensive services, including site assessments, value engineering, BIM integration, and material selection, ensuring the project remained on schedule and within budget.

With careful planning, PB helped the project team navigate challenges such as long-lead item procurement, phased site development, and resource management. Every decision was made to maximize the clinic’s functionality while addressing the urgency of moving operations out of the aging Kirman Avenue facility.

A Community-Driven Effort

In 2024 alone, the tuberculosis program evaluated over 200 patients and treated more than 100 for latent TB, emphasizing the vital role this new clinic will play in Northern Nevada. The facility’s advanced capabilities will allow NNPH to better serve a growing population while reducing stigma around tuberculosis care.

This project reflects a collaborative effort between NNPH, the State of Nevada, and Washoe County leaders, all committed to improving public health infrastructure. Plenium Builders’ expertise in preconstruction provided the foundation for this transformative project.

Building for the Future

The new tuberculosis clinic is more than just a building—it’s a commitment to protecting and supporting the community. With enhanced capacity, modern safety features, and efficient operations, the facility will stand as a beacon of hope for patients and staff alike.

For Plenium Builders, this project underscores the value of expertise, collaboration, and dedication in creating spaces that make a difference. As construction progresses, the clinic will remain a testament to the power of planning and partnership in public health.
